Find out how medications can impact drug test results for truck drivers.
Medications can impact drug test results and potentially lead to a positive test result. It is important for truck drivers to refrain from taking medications while on duty that can affect their ability to work safely and maintain a constant state of alertness. The Medical Review Officer (MRO) reviews positive drug test results and will determine whether they are due to legitimate medical use or not. If there are safety concerns about the medication, the MRO must inform the DER about the safety concern.
Medications should not be disclosed at the time of the drug test collection. The sample is sent to a lab for testing and if the lab test is reported as positive, the MRO will contact the donor and discuss the result. The MRO makes the final determination about whether the positive result can be explained by a medication. If so, the test is reported as a negative result. This process ensures confidentiality for the driver, as well as prevents the driver from disciplinary action due to taking needed medication.
